Builder Start Check
START CHECK Stage
When: The job supervisor should schedule the Fireplace Start Check AFTER the fireplace is installed, faced and the gas is connected and turned on at the main valve and any other intermediate valve(s). It is advantageous to have the Fireplace Start Check scheduled after all other trades have completed any work, which may affect the fireplace.
The latest the fireplace Start Check can be completed is before the structure is occupied, from a practical point this is usually just before settlement. Unless otherwise arranged, we perform the start check on all gas fireplaces and most pellet units. Wood and coal units are excluded in most cases.

Why: Start Check - Why utilize the start check service from FlameWorks?
1. Saves significant effort and time for the builder / contactor and his or her employees.
2. Ensures that the fireplace is operating according to manufactures specifications just before it is likely to be put into use.
3. Reduces builder liability by having work done by a trained professional.
4. Reduces service requests after the structure is occupied.
Gas Active - Why does the gas have to be on? Can’t you open a valve?
1. Safety, safety, safety. Only the plumber knows if it is safe to open fuel lines in a partially completed structure. Only the plumber knows if the gas lines have been completed and pressure tested.
Accessories – Why are most of the accessories and trim pieces installed at the start check phase?
1. Many Fireplace accessories are fragile or decorative in nature. Bringing these items out as late in the process as reasonable reduces the chance that they become damaged.
2.
Many Fireplace accessories, especially
remotes, are costly and easily removed from the premises.
Reduced cost from reduced loss.
Considerations:
q Changes – Are they communicated to all applicable trades in a timely manor?
q Gas Type, any change since the fireplace was installed?
q Gas connected and on at ALL valves in gas line run?
q Access, is the structure accessible for the service person to gain entry?
